Pagan Sacred Chant
A four-workshop series in simple pagan, animistic and medieval songs to open your connection with divinity.
Day-to-day reverence for animals, deities, land, and cycles of time was once passed down casually through simple songs. Altered states were as ready-to-hand as a handful of words and a melody remembered.
We can revive those half-forgotten ways and make our relationship to the world sacred again.
I’ve been researching traditional song and paganism in northern Europe for a decade now, looking out for songs for sacred moments, and I’ve collected some gems in English, Scots, Scottish Gaelic, Swedish, Old Norse, Lithuanian and more that I would love to share with you. Some are older, some are newer, and some are a mix of both!
The work of reclaiming sacred song is ongoing. Come join me to feel the power of repetition, to learn and make mistakes, to connect with the old ways, and to open a conversation with the ancestors about where we might go next.

What to expect
Before each workshop, you will receive an email with prompts to consider in preparation for the our ceremonial chanting experience. We will gather with the intention of transformative presence, and weaving the future with intention.
We will gather on zoom, where I will introduce chants in ancient European languages, some seasonal and a selection others that I have learned over the years or recently.
After teaching the chant, I will lead us into a period of sustained singing, long enough that we can begin to feel the songs in the body and witness movement of emotion and life force through rhythmic conversation with ancestors, spirits, gods, animals and otherworld beings.
Lyrics will be provided. If the words or melody are too challenging in the moment, you are welcome to hum or simply listen instead. The intention is to tune into presence, whatever makes that possible for you. Your singing will not be audible on the zoom call, so your sound is simply an offering to yourself, the living world and the divine.
While our experience of music and song can be heavily shaped by performance conventions in ordinary life, these gatherings are designed to foreground the somatic experience of chanting over any sense of performing for others. We gather to converse with divinity in the bodies and the lives that we have.

What is pagan sacred chant?
In many of the world’s cultures, short, repetitive songs, prayers, mantras, and the names of gods and spirits are sung in devotional contexts. These are commonly referred to as chants.
In most western European traditions, the practice of vernacular devotional singing has fallen by the wayside through a combination of Christianization, secularization, and industrialization.
I invite you to revive the spirit of sacred song again in a meditative and supportive context, both for personal and communal growth and for the regeneration of nourishing traditional cultures.
